Implants

The Courtyard has developed a reputation for being able to restore very broken down dentitions and very complex cases.

Often people have lost teeth from decay, gum disease, excessive wear or a sporting accident. Sometimes a combination of all of these. What connects these patients is that all of them have made the decision to do something about it.

There is no longer any reason why these cases cannot be restored to a level where both function and appearance are close to that which natural teeth would provide. Dental implants provide the solution to all of these problems.

Loose Dentures

In the past when people lost teeth they would often be provided with a denture. We do not believe that dentures are an appropriate or successful substitute for teeth. They have many drawbacks which we will discuss here.

They are often not very secure leading to lack of confidence that they could slip out causing embarrassment. Partial dentures, where some natural teeth are still present, have been proven to speed up the loss of the remaining teeth. Dentures have a very real association with old age, and needing to wear a denture makes people feel older. In addition denture wearers often have to change their diet to avoid foods they enjoy and incorporate a softer, easier diet. This often has consequences on their overall health and digestion system.

Single Missing Teeth

With patients living longer and longer and the public becoming more health conscious people are rightly more concerned about leaving gaps in their smile. Even when these gaps are at the back of the mouth, not treating these areas has knock on effects on the function and appearance of the rest of the teeth. In simple terms teeth grow until they hit other teeth. When gaps are created, neighbouring and opposing teeth will drift into this space causing further dental problems. When teeth overgrow they create spaces that cannot be cleaned and inevitably lead to decay and sometimes extraction of these teeth. Neighbouring teeth that drift can impair the bite and cause clicking of the jaw joint and sensitive teeth.

Restoring these types of gaps with dental implants is the best long term and natural way to avoid these problems. It is safe to say that any other solution to a single tooth gap, whether it be a denture or a bridge, will cause some sort of damage or negative effect on the neighbouring teeth.

Failing Bridges

Bridges have proven to be a successful long term approach to restoring function and appearance when teeth have been lost. For a long time studies have shown bridges to last in the region of 15 to 20 years. This is a good long term result by any standards. However people live longer than 20 years, and when the bridge ultimately fails, alternative solutions need to be found. In the past when bridges failed, new neighbouring teeth were prepared to support a longer bridge. This approach is not ideal and is also doomed to failure at some time in the future.

Implants are a fantastic way to restore failed bridges without the need to damage neighbouring teeth in any way. Implants also offer the possibility of a life span extending over 20 years with proper maintenance. As such they offer great value for money when considered on this context.
